Baby Steps in "Greenville"

In the land of Greenville most home people that clean (mothers, fathers --sometimes...Ha , kids who are forced to and dogs with extra long fluffy tails..) would be using 100% good products that are good for the ozone layer, smell less yucky, and clean just as great as good old fashioned windex..Well this home isn't the capital of Greenville. Yes I know this might come to you as a shock (since people claim that my house is always spotless and they wonder what I use to clean things with) but I am a D- student when it comes to buying "green" products and not killing the ozone layer or the nice fluffy polar bears

So once I came upon this "tip" on using this everyday household item to clean almost anything a light bulb came off in my head. Against my better judgement I tried using plain old boring white vinegar to use for my laundry fabric softener. I heart Downy and all the nice smelling softeners but gosh they are really getting pricey. So the cheap side of me...I mean frugal part of me wanted to try this other solution.
I tried it and it works great! I just fill up my handy dandy holder thing in my machine and off it goes to clean my laundry in no time..And the best part of all is that it doesn't leave a nasty easter egg smell at all in your clothes. Score one for mom!

Here is a couple of other things you can do with your bottle of white vinegar that you have hiding in your kitchen pantry
- You can clean your kitchen counter tops with it (I have tried this and so far I like it)
- Clean that nasty layer of grease and old food in your microwave by mixing 1/2 cup white vinegar and 1/2 cup water in a microwave-safe bowl. Bring it to a rolling boil inside the microwave. Wipe clean.

Easy Meal Time Idea

Here is a super easy meal for those times when you just have 50 things going on and have no time to sit down and make a long drawn out meal.

Easy Ham Roll
1 Can of Pizza Crust
1 C diced ham (you could use other precooked meat)
1 C cut up small fresh broccoli
Cheese - Shredded
1/2 C Ranch Dressing

Roll out the pizza crust, spread with dressing, top with ham, broccoli and cheese. Roll into a nice log and bake at 375 for 20-25 min or until golden brown. Let cool before you cut into it!

I served this with some green beans and fruit for a super fast easy dinner

Talking about Makeup Folks

On my search to lower my monthly makeup bill , I have been on the hunt for good quality makeup at a lower price. I think it truly set in as to how much makeup I own once we moved into our new house, I do give myself credit for throwing out old makeup that is past its prime though..(check out the makeup chart down at the bottom of this post for hints on when its time to trash the stuff even if it looks "ok" )

Anywho the whole point of this post is that yes you can have beauty on a budget.

This is the first major purchase of makeup at elf online. I guess I can't figure out which stores in this lovely town of mine carry the makeup and since I wanted to be able to try different shades and different types I ordered online. (Note to self - unless you upgrade to faster shipping it may take up to 14 days to get it..that's a long time in makeup land)

So today was the first day that my face had 90% Elf makeup on it (the other 10% was my foundation from clinque) So far its just as good as its pricey counterparts. Within the next week or so I will post some pictures of the colors I have tried and my reviews of them. So stay tuned!

Here is that chart I was talking about

Powder- 2 years
Eyeshadow (powder) - 2 years
Mascara- 3 months
Lipstick- 2 years

Kitchen Helpers

Sometimes I think about how lonely it is in this kitchen of mine..Other times I don't..
Check out the kitchen "helpers"

They have such a rough life!

Yummy Candy --So bad for you, its good!

Woo-Hoo for food! C is for candy its good enough for me oh C is for candy its good enough for me, Candy, Candy, Candy starts with C :) (Doesn't that song make you wanna go in the kitchen and make something?!) <--Yes I know that song is C is for Cookie but I changed it

Before I get to the awesome step by couple of steps pictures I need to give you the recipe first.
If you know me very well you know that most of the food I make (including sweets) I don't really follow set in stone recipes. That is just how I roll..Sometimes they work great other times they don't.
So Here is the "rough" outline of what it takes to make this candy
  • almost 1 sleeve of saltines
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • almost 2 cups chocolate chips or any type of chocolate that will melt for you

layer saltines in a foil lined 13 x 9 pan (grease the foil! trust me )
mix butter and sugar in pan, melt and let it boil for about 3 min.
pour the hot goodness over the crackers, top with the chocolate and let melt and spread.
put into fridge for about 2 hrs, cut and eat

Now onto the pictures!!!

What's Growing?

I guess this must be the summer of growing in this house, I seem to have acquired 2 new things to try and keep alive in this house (Notice how all items requiring anything seems to fall on the shoulders of the mother in the house?! Is it just me? I.think.not.

1) K was dead set on getting some kind of "pet" kit for her birthday. So against my better judgement we got her a butterfly kit for her birthday! She was so happy about it! Well, she was really happy until she found out that no, real "live" butterflies are not in the kit that you see on the shelf of meijers. You have to send in the postcard with some money to get them to you (also redeem it online which is a nice plus!) And you have to wait so many days for them to come (we don't have hogwarts mail here- sorry you must wait)
So she is the proud owner of 2 containers of live (or around 80 % of them are) "pre" butterflies

2) For fathers day D class at school planted a tomato plant. So not only do we have live things growing in this house (besides us humans and pets) we also have this tall, skinny plant sitting above the kitchen sink..I really hope I get at least 1 tomato from it, I know it has nothing to grow up on or anything but a girl can hope can't she?!? (Had to add the plant VS the microwave pic just to prove that yes in fact I have not killed it yet. this must be a record for me.)
